YouTube Gold: Yao Ming, the first great Chinese basketball player

When you look at the greatest players in NBA history, the top of the list, no pun intended, looks like this:

  • Gheorghe MureÈ™an, 7-7
  • Manute Bol, 7-7
  • Slavko VraneÅ¡, 7-6
  • Shawn Bradley, 7-6
  • Yao Ming, 7-6
  • Chuck Nevitt, 7-5
  • Pavel Podkolzine, 7-5
  • Sim Bhullar, 7-5
  • Tacko fall, 7-5

Most of these guys were new and didn’t really know how to play basketball. But one of them is not like the others: Yao Ming was a legitimate basketball player.

When you watch this video of some of his best plays, on the one hand, you see a lot of dunks. But on the other you see a guy who could pass, who had good timing on blocked shots and had really exceptional footwork.

He could really play.

He wasn’t necessarily a spectacular athlete, but he took a long time and it paid off. As Duke learned in 2019 against Tacko Fall in Central Florida, at times, 7-5 is just plain hard to deal with.

But as you’ll see here, Yao towered over guys like Shaquille O’Neal and Ben Wallace and could really maneuver the lane. In places, in fact, his footwork and post moves are very reminiscent of Boston Celtic’s great Kevin McHale.

Unfortunately, his career was cut short by injuries which severely limited him in his later years. However, the Yao family may not be done with basketball yet: Yao Ming married a professional basketball player who is 6-3 years old. They have a daughter who is now 11 years old and is already around 5-6 years old. She seems certain to grow a little more and if she wants to play on her own she will have a great home training.
