KEEP AN EYE ON

Scouting DePaul: The Blue Demons are expected to be UConn’s biggest Big East test this season. DePaul ranks No. 1 nationally (92.0 points per game) and No. 3 in assists per game (20.4). UConn is averaging 70.9 points and 17.9 assists per game.

DePaul’s greatest weapon is rookie Aneesah Morrow. The 6-foot-1 forward is tied for first in the nation with 15 double-doubles and is ranked No. 1 in offensive rebounds per game (5.3). She’s second with 12.5 rebounds per game and No. 4 with 406 total points on the season.

The Blue Demons are entering a four-game winning streak. Their only loss in the Big East came against Marquette on January 12 (88-85 in overtime). DePaul lost pretty close matches to three AP Top 25 programs: No. 20 Notre Dame (91-86 on Dec. 22), No. 9 Arizona (75-68 on Nov. 26), and No. 24 Texas. A&M (95-75 on November 15). DePaul’s only win on a Top 25 program was against No. 14 Kentucky (94-85) on Dec. 9.

What’s online: UConn will put its 167-game regular-season winning streak on the line. The streak spans across the American Athletic Conference and the Big East. The Huskies last lost to a conference opponent on March 12, 2013, losing 61-59 to Notre Dame.

The Huskies also haven’t lost to DePaul since Dec. 28, 1983 — five years before DePaul coach Doug Bruno took over the program and two years before UConn coach Geno Auriemma began his tenure at Storms. UConn is 47-1 against DePaul.

Status of Christyn Williams: After UConn’s win at St. John’s on Sunday, Auriemma said there was no clear timeline for Williams’ return to the roster. The senior was placed on COVID-19 protocols last Sunday and hasn’t played since January 15. Williams was with the team in New York on Sunday but did not participate in warmups. Before UConn’s game in South Carolina was called off, Auriemma said the hope was to get her back for Thursday. He didn’t say if she’ll be available for Wednesday’s game at DePaul, leaving UConn with likely only eight available players and three guards.

Without its second leading scorer, UConn lost one game (at Oregon last Monday) and won two Big East games.

After ending 2021 in a bit of a shooting slump, Williams started the new year playing his best basketball of the season. In UConn’s first three games after the holidays, the senior averaged 17 points and had a career-high seven interceptions at Butler.

As a team, UConn averaged 77.6 points per game in the first three games of the new year with Williams. In her three games without her, the Huskies are averaging 68.3 points per game.

Williams also played at least 31 minutes in each of those first three games after the holiday break. UConn replaced its time on the court with sophomore Nika Mühl, who played two 40-minute games for the first time in her career over the past week. Senior Evina Westbrook replaced Williams in the starting lineup.
