Philadelphia 76ers star Joel Embiid set to abandon his home country of Cameroon after getting a French passport
The center of the Philadelphia 76ers has reportedly made a transfer from Cameroon to France in international basketball in the last 6 months.
The 28-year-old is now open for selection for France ahead of the upcoming Euro Basket 2022, FIBA Basketball World Cup 2023 and Olympic Games 2024.
Joël Embiid the Cameroonian
Joël Embiid was born on March 16, 1994 in Yaoundé, the capital of Cameroon, where he spent his childhood playing sports.
Embiid played volleyball, football and basketball in Cameroon until he was discovered at the age of 15 at a basketball camp by Luc Mbah a Moute, a fellow native of Yaoundé who also played in the NBA.
Joel Embiid then moved to the United States to pursue his professional basketball career where he has lived ever since.
What does it bring to France?
He also led the league in scoring which shows the level of elite talent he possesses which could have helped Cameroonian basketball a lot.
But France offers them a better chance of winning something internationally as they are currently ranked fourth in the world on the latest FIBA rankings compared to Cameroon who are ranked 64th in the world.
Embiid will be the latest in a long line of NBA talent currently with the French national team, including Minnesota Timberwolves superstar center Rudy Gobert.
