Lou Lopez-Senechal of Fairfield transferred to UConn women’s basketball team

Lou Lopez-Senechal, who averaged 19.6 points and shot 40% on 3-pointers last season as a senior at Fairfield, will use his final season of eligibility to play at UConn, it was announced on Saturday. .

Joe Frager retired as coach and was replaced by Carly Thibault-Dudonis, who knew Lopez-Senechal had planned a visit to UConn and planned to try to convince her to return for a fifth year with the Stags .

But Lopez-Senechal always thought playing in a top-tier major program would be an important testing ground for his career aspirations.

“I’m very grateful and very touched by many schools that have reached out to me,” Lopez-Senechal said last week when discussing her career at Fairfield and her future options. “It’s something I didn’t expect, even with the career I’ve had here. Coming to college, I had no interest from these schools. It makes me very happy. It has been a very interesting process – not so new, but different in a way. I try to see what is best for me.

Lopez-Senechal was born in Guadalajara, Mexico and raised in Grenoble, France. She spent a year at a basketball academy in Ireland before coming to the United States. With the help of her American father-in-law, she initiated most of the steps in her recruiting process, approaching colleges. Frager said Lopez-Senechal flew under the radar of many programs and he probably wouldn’t have been able to sign her had she had the exposure that comes with playing high school and AAU ball in America.

Lopez-Senechal first heard of UConn assistant coach Morgan Valley and a visit was scheduled from there.

“To have the interest of one of the best schools in the country – maybe even the best school in the country – is great and I was very touched by it,” she said of her recruitment by UConn. . “The conversation was great. I try to see what’s best for me, but it’s been really great with them and I’m very happy to be able to participate in the conversation with them.

Frager said, “Lou is a phenomenal shooter and a real jump shooter, not a board shooter. At 6-1, when she gets up, she’s able to shoot that shot really well. She does a good job of reading screens, which has improved in four years, and she’s really developed a scoring mentality. When we first got her she would take two or three shots and miss and wouldn’t shoot again. I was like, ‘No, no, no. Your role on this team is to chase your shot. She really grew up there. And in her junior and senior years, she took pretty much every big hit we had to take.

Lopez-Senechal will help UConn stretch the defense with their lineup, giving the Huskies an important scoring option from the perimeter, especially in the absence of deceased seniors Christyn Williams and Evina Westbrook.

“One of my goals is to play professionally,” Lopez-Sénéchal said. “I think the possibility of going to a bigger school is important for me, to play at a higher level, against better competition, training every day against the best players. I think it’s very important to prepare myself, physically and mentally, for a higher level. That’s what I’m looking for, a challenge for myself. A year can pass quickly, but it can also bring me a lot. I try to to use in the best possible way.

“For my end of senior year and my four years at Fairfield, it couldn’t have been better. It was great that we did this for Coach Frager, and it was really rewarding after my trip. I feel very blessed. I think I made a very good decision and the rest is history. It was really a great time here.
