TROY, NY – The Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI) men’s basketball team, which begins its season on Friday, will be led through the 2021-22 campaign by four student-athletes. Black (Arlington, MA / Arlington), a goaltender, has played 54 career games including 43 as a starter. He averages 9.2 points and 4.8 rebounds with 146 assists, 86 steals and 18 blocked shots. In his sophomore in 2019-20, he started all 29 games, playing 31.2 minutes per minute and averaging 11.3 points and 6.1 rebounds. He was the team’s first in minutes, averaging rebounds, assists (96) and steals (62) en route to being named Liberty League Defensive Player of the Year and in the runner-up. All-Liberty League team. Black is a mechanical engineering student.
Bleibtrey (Queensbury, NY / Queensbury) has played 14 games, scoring nine points with four rebounds, three assists and three steals. Ten of his games played came two years ago when he helped the Engineers establish a 24-5 record, including an 18-game winning streak, and first place in the Liberty League regular season standings. . RPI played in the NCAA tournament, qualifying for the second round.
A fifth-year senior forward, Mahoney (Ossining, NY / Fordham Prep.) Started all 29 games as a junior, averaging 14.8 points and 5.7 rebounds in 28.5 minutes. He also had 44 assists, 27 steals and four blocked shots and was named Liberty League Player of the Year, National Basketball Coaches Association (NABC) Eastern Region Player of the Year and a selection of the first US national team of the NABC. A graduate in business and management, Mahoney has scored 868 career points in 78 games (54 starts) for an average of 11.1. He took 4.5 rebounds per game while handing out 99 assists with 41 steals and nine blocked shots. Memmelaar (Middletown, NY / Pine Bush) is a senior forward who started all 29 games in sophomore after playing 22 games in freshman. He averaged 13.3 points and 5.6 rebounds in 24.2 minutes in 2019-20 when he was an honorable mention in the All-Liberty League. He finished second on the team in points average and steals (42). The civil engineering major also had 55 assists and 21 blocked shots, a high for the team. In the freshman, he averaged 3.3 points and 1.7 rebounds in 8.2 minutes per game.
Engineers travel to western New York State for the Mike Daley Memorial Tournament hosted by Nazareth College. They play at Medaille College on Fridays at 6 p.m. and either at the Golden Flyers host or at Cazenovia College on Saturdays at 1 or 3 p.m. After a game at SUNY Delhi on November 16, RPI made their home debut the following week (November 23) against SUNY Cobleskill (7pm).
