Doug Gottlieb Says This NBA Player Is Lamar Jackson’s Basketball Comparison

Doug Gottlieb: “Lamar Jackson, according to an ESPN survey of more than 50 league executives, coaches and players, is not among the top 10 quarterbacks in the NFL. WHOOOOOA, THIS WILL HURT SOME PEOPLE! I was considered a “hater” of Lamar Jackson when he came out because I thought Sam Darnold would be better. I was wrong. I would credit the fact that Baltimore did a great job putting him in an offense he can’t just survive, but excel at. I think he is the parallel of James Harden. The way he plays in the regular season is different from what it takes to survive and succeed in the playoffs. Look at James Harden and how ineffective he was [in the playoffs]. He shoots fouls in the regular season that he can’t in the playoffs, whereas Lamar Jackson is a guy who’s a great runner, and amazing in the red zone in the regular season, but in the playoffs he struggles. People keep it in the pocket, people rush the setter differently, people make you throw in tight windows, and with the exception of a road win, it has struggled. It’s the parallel and I don’t think it’s that far from the truth. One of the reasons people in the league are against him – and I’ve talked to a bunch of people about this – is that during his rookie contract they were able to put an amazing team around him, so With that in mind, if you can’t win multiple playoff games when you have an incredible Super Bowl-caliber defense, when he gets the big contract, they won’t be able to put nearly the same team around him. You can say what you want about Pat Mahomes and how he took the ‘home cut’, but they couldn’t keep Tyreek Hill, and they won’t be able to keep everyone. Then there’s the “does he wear down all the hits he takes in the regular season, or all the runs?” To win, you need to be able to pull off those huge third down tries, and Lamar just doesn’t have that many. [as guys ranked in the top 10]. This is where I would compare Lamar to Russell Westbrook. I think the stats are very skewed because a lot of the pitches are layup pitches. Because he so dominates football much like Russell Westbrook dominates basketball with usage rating, these stats are very skewed. You can say he was an MVP but wasn’t Cam Newton the league’s MVP when they went 15-1? Cam has never been solidified as a top-10 quarterback every year.” (Full segment above)
