Renaissance High basketball star Malik Hairston who graduated in 2004 returns home as a restaurant co-owner in Detroit after a professional athletic career with teams in San Antonio, Austin, Italy , Turkey, Greece, Israel and France.


Malik Hairston, a 6’5 ” goaltender and forward, led Renaissance High to a 27-0 season in 2004.

The 34-year-old former NBA player opened Spudz & Clucks, a quick and laid-back spot on Grand River Avenue last summer, with his brother Richard Hairston and friend Ty Haygood. They offer ten styles of loaded fries (photos below), chicken wings, chicken sandwiches, and burgers.

Samurai fries are served Hibachi style with one of four protein elements (chicken, shrimp, salmon or steak, plus vegetables mixed with a garlic butter sauce ($ 10- $ 16). menu also includes bites of fried cauliflower and the Butter Clucker breakfast – fried chicken fillets drizzled with honey butter between a waffle-like bun ($ 11).

Drinks include milkshakes (vanilla, strawberry or chocolate). The only dessert is sweet potato fries mixed with brown sugar and cinnamon, with pecans and vanilla ice cream ($ 8).

Fried chicken wings can be plain or mixed with one of nine flavors (mango habanero, blueberry barbecue, apple barbecue, homemade barbecue, spicy barbecue, buffalo, garlic parmesan, caribbean sauce, lemon pepper) .

Chili fries are listed as “2am at Coney Fries”.

All-American fries are topped with chopped burger, red onion, lettuce, tomato, pickles, cheese and “Spudz sauce”.

Fried chicken fillets, drizzled with butter and honey sauce, sit between a waffle-like bun for a buttery breakfast.

Beef mozzarella and pepperoni are on top “Pizza Frites de Sal.”
